Hearing and Hearing

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Romans 10:17)
This short verse contains a small but important detail that many Christians miss if they read it too quickly. Paul does not say faith comes simply by hearing. He repeated the word: hearing, and hearing. That repetition tells us something about how faith is actually built. It is not the product of a single exposure to Biblical truth. It is the product of continuous, ongoing exposure to the Word.
This is the first of the five elements that work together to produce active faith. Hearing comes before receiving, believing, speaking, and acting, and none of those later stages function properly without a strong foundation of hearing beneath them. A single sermon or a single verse read once rarely produces the kind of settled conviction that faith requires. It usually takes repeated, sustained hearing over time.
This should reshape how many Christians think about spiritual growth. If your faith feels weak in a particular area, the most likely explanation is not a character flaw or a spiritual deficiency in that area. It is simply a lack of sufficient hearing on that specific subject. The remedy is straightforward, even if it requires patience. Return to the Word on that subject again and again until hearing produces the faith it was always designed to produce.
Practical Application
Identify one area where your faith seems weak and commit to hearing the Word on that specific subject repeatedly this week, not just once.
John 6:33; Colossians 3:16
