And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes; Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. (Daniel 1:3-4)
What do you do when you find yourself in difficult situations? The book of Daniel begins during a dark time for Israel. The once beautiful city of Jerusalem has been destroyed. Sacred vessels from the Temple of God have been carried away to a pagan land. There, a new chapter started for the people of Israel, not in freedom and prosperity, but in captivity. Yet even in Babylon, God was still at work. He was still calling, equipping, and positioning His people. Even in a strange land, God’s will and purpose were not canceled. Israel’s rebellion against God’s laws and ways brought them into captivity. Still, even amid judgment, God had faithful people who had favor despite the difficulties. The king of Babylon had given specific instructions: bring the best of the best— the brightest minds, the most capable, those of royal and noble blood. Why? Because the enemy always tries to reshape the next generation through compromise. However, Daniel and his friends weren’t just chosen by Nebuchadnezzar; God had already chosen them. Although Daniel and his friends weren’t in the situations they wanted to be in and circumstances were complex, their calling remained. Their gifts were still recognized. If you feel overlooked, unappreciated, or unseen, know that God sees you, He still calls you, and He wants to use you, no matter what troubles surround you. God can raise you up, even in Babylon.
Practical Application
You may be facing a challenging situation, and no one may be standing by your side in faith. Maybe it feels like you're the only Christian at the job site or in your family. If it feels like no one recognizes you, close your eyes and say out loud, “God sees me.” He has anointed and purposed you to be here for such a time as this.
2 Chronicles 36:7; Jeremiah 51:44
