From Waiting to Walking in Power

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)

There is a before and after Pentecost. Before Pentecost, the believers were waiting for power; they were faithful but didn’t have fire. On the day of Pentecost, the promise was finally fulfilled. The waiting period was over, the wind came, and a new era exploded onto the scene. After Pentecost, not only did they have faith, but the followers of Christ burned with the power of the Holy Spirit. However, before the fire came, note that unity came first.

They were all together in one accord—one place, one heart, with the earnest expectation that God would do what He promised. Unity is the runway for the Holy Ghost. The Spirit flows more easily when there is a corporate hunger and pull.

In that attitude of hunger, the Holy Spirit rushed in like a mighty wind—not a quiet, smooth breeze but a shaking, moving, atmosphere-changing wind. When the Holy Spirit fell, there was no more “business as usual” church. Now, believers were called to speak and live with power and fire.

This wasn’t just for the elite, either. It wasn’t the preachers who were filled, but everyone in the room. No one was “too young,” ”too old,” or “too new.” The Holy Spirit doesn’t pick favorites; He picks the hungry and the willing.

Practical Application

Take time to pray in the Spirit every day. What are you expecting from the Holy Spirit this week? Set your expectation higher and be ready to move as He leads you.
