And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.  And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? (Luke 2:45-49)

At twelve years old, Jesus understood something that every believer must learn. He dedicated time and effort to finding Himself in Scripture. He did not rely on assumptions; instead, He searched the Word. By reading and studying God's Word, He uncovered His purpose. Jesus was fully God, yet He operated as a man anointed by the Spirit. He learned, asked questions, and grew. This should encourage every believer. Growth is part of the journey. You may not know everything now, but because you are anointed by the Holy Spirit, you are empowered to grow daily in your knowledge of God and His Word.

Jesus did not wander aimlessly on earth. He knew He had an assignment. The Word revealed it. That’s why He could respond confidently when Pharisees questioned Him and stand firm when demons shouted at Him. He was grounded in what Scripture said about Him.

Living by faith requires the same discipline. You discover who you are by what the Word says, not by your feelings or past experiences. The Word shows you your true identity in Christ. That’s where your identity is meant to be formed.

When you know who you are, obedience becomes easier, and confusion starts to fade.

Practical Application

Spend time in the Word this week, especially in the epistles, and look for the phrases “in Christ,” “in Him,” and “in whom.” These reveal who you are. Say them aloud. Remind yourself, and let them shape you.

John 4:34; Psalm 40:8
