Don’t Insult the Spirit of Grace

He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:28-29)
Under the Old Covenant, mercy was not freely available. The law was unambiguous: sin meant death. Thank God we aren’t living under that covenant any longer. God is always merciful, but even His grace and mercy require a response from us to function.
Unfortunately, some individuals offend and insult the Holy Spirit by claiming that none of what they once believed about Jesus as Lord and Savior is true. This goes much deeper than normal stumbling—it is truly “despising” the Spirit of Grace.
Although His grace costs you nothing, it does demand reverence. God’s very nature is that He is gracious. God is kind, benevolent, considerate and desires to connect with you. Nothing you do can make Him be that; it is in His nature.
Grace is one of the greatest gifts we have been given, but it should not be treated as simple or common. Jesus’ blood is priceless, His Spirit is precious, and we are called to live in holiness to honor who He is.
Practical Application
While God is personal and desires to have a relationship with you, He also deserves honor and reverence. Have you made your relationship with God too casual? You may talk to Him as a friend, but do you worship and honor Him as King? Thank Him today with reverence and honor for what He has done and who He is.
