Crave the Word

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious. (1 Peter 2:2-3)

Notice that Peter didn’t present this as a suggestion, but rather as a command. Why? Because spiritual growth doesn’t occur by chance—it comes by feeding on the Word.

Have you ever seen a newborn baby? Hungry seems to be a part of their personality. When one of my kids was born, as soon as momma tried to nurse them, that kid launched into her. No waiting. No hesitation. No shame. Just hunger. That’s how Peter tells us to come to the Word - like a newborn baby.

You don’t need to understand everything or fix everything in your life; you need to be hungry for the right thing. The problem with many believers is that they stop “craving” the Word and don’t become familiar with the things of God.Peter was clear in his writing that you grow by feeding. No matter how mature you get or how long you have been saved, you never outgrow the Word.

This verse further explains that if you have received the Word, you have received God’s “graciousness.” That word in the Greek is chréstos, which means useful, kind, and easy to be with. God is not trying to break you; He wants to give you His strength. He knows that the only way for you to gain the strength you need is to receive the Word.

Practical Application

Are you nourishing your spirit as much as you’re scrolling online? Are you beginning your days with the Word or with the weather? Make it a point to prioritize what you feed yourself and dedicate time to the Word.
