Come and Lay Thy Hands on Her

And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.  (Mark 5:22-24)

Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue. That was no small task. It was a very important position of real standing in his community. Yet when his daughter's life was on the line, none of that status could bring her healing. So in humility, he fell at Jesus' feet and pleaded urgently on her behalf. Position and reputation gave way completely to desperate, specific faith the moment real need entered the picture.

Also, notice how specific Jairus’ request of Jesus was. He did not simply ask Jesus to pray in general terms. He asked Him to come and lay hands on her, believing that this act would result in her healing and the preservation of her life. His faith had a clear target and a clear expectation attached to it, not a vague hope that something good might happen.

Jesus responded by immediately following him without hesitation. This illustrates how God responds to specific, urgent faith, especially when it comes from genuine desperation rather than a casual request. Jairus did not have time for elaborate theological arguments. He believed Jesus could help, so he asked accordingly. That kind of direct, specific faith is exactly what Jesus moved toward.

Practical Application

Bring your need to God today with the same specificity and faith that Jairus showed. Do not settle for vague requests when you know exactly what you need Him to do.

Hebrews 11:6; Psalm 62:5
