Blessed in Everything

And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. (Genesis 24:1)

This verse is just one sentence, but it contains so much! At the end of Abraham's long journey, after the call out of Ur, after years of sojourning as a stranger, after the test on Mount Moriah, after all the seasons of faith, patience, and believing God when the circumstances said otherwise, there is a one-sentence summary of how it all turned out. 'The Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.' It was not in most things, but rather in all things. That means every part of his life. It means his body was blessed; he was old but not broken or worn out. It means his family was blessed; Isaac was thriving, carrying the promise into the next generation. It means his finances were blessed; Genesis 13 tells us Abraham was very rich in cattle, silver, and gold. His work, his relationships, his household and his whole life was marked by the blessing of God.

Because God keeps His Word and has sworn by Himself to bless Abraham, He made the same covenant available to you through Jesus Christ. It is not a lesser version of it. Galatians 3:29 says that if you are in Christ, you are Abraham's seed and an heir according to the promise. The same God who blessed Abraham in all things is your God. He is not a respecter of persons, which means that what He did for Abraham, He will do for you as you walk the same walk Abraham walked which involved obeying God through faith and patience, hearing His Word, receiving it, and acting on it.

Some people have accepted a version of the Christian life that is about barely getting through, holding on until heaven, and hoping things do not get too bad in the meantime. That is not what God promised Abraham, and it is not what He has promised you. His intention is for you to be blessed in all things.

Practical Application

Declare Genesis 24:1 over your own life today. Put your name in it. “The Lord has blessed [your name] in all things.” Say it as an act of faith, not because everything looks like it is working out right now, but because you are standing on the same promise Abraham stood on. Speak it until it moves from your head to your heart.
