All These Blessings Shall Come on Thee

And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. (Deuteronomy 28:2-3)
“IF” is probably one of the most important words in this verse because the blessings are conditional. Blessing is described as something that comes upon and overtakes those who hearken diligently to His voice. The word “overtake” suggests something pursuing and catching up to a person. This does not refer to people who have to chase it down and manufacture it through their own efforts alone. Obedience positions a person to be overtaken by blessing rather than having to hunt it down.
This principle runs consistently throughout Scripture. It is not a promise limited to any single group of people at any particular time in history. It describes a relationship between obedience to God's voice and the blessing that follows. That’s what harkening is. It’s not just hearing what God says; it’s paying attention and obeying.
This should be deeply encouraging rather than merely instructional. It means blessing is not primarily dependent on circumstances outside your control. It is tied to something you actually have access to: your own willingness to hearken diligently to what God has said.
Regardless of where you are starting from, aligning your life with God's voice puts you in the position this passage describes: being overtaken by blessing rather than having to manufacture it through willpower alone.
Practical Application
Identify one specific area where God has been speaking to you but you have not fully heeded. Align that area with obedience today, trusting that blessings will follow as the Word says.
Psalm 23:6; Isaiah 1:19
