All Authority Over the Enemy

And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. (Luke 10:17-18)

No matter what you think or feel, you're not fighting for victory; you're enforcing the victory Jesus already won. In Luke 10, we see that when the seventy followers of Jesus returned after being sent out, they were excited. They said, “Even the devils are subject to us through Your name.” They had encountered spiritual resistance before, but suddenly they were seeing darkness obey them as they acted in authority.

When Jesus heard their testimony, He explained what was happening in the Heavenly realm. He said, “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” In other words, “The enemy is no longer in power or authority. I saw his defeat from the start. The enemy is not some arch-rival to God Almighty. He’s a rebellious punk who has already been kicked out.”

You need to understand that you have authority, and the enemy does not inherently possess any. But authority must be utilized. Authority must be spoken. Authority is released through words. That’s why Jesus connected it to His name. His name isn’t just a slogan; it’s the legal basis for command.

I have heard many Christians pray over the years as if the enemy is still in charge. They beg God to do what He already told them to do. And God is faithful, but He expects you to stand on what Jesus has given you. If you are born again, you are not a spiritual civilian or merely a citizen of Heaven. You’ve been authorized as part of the royal family of Heaven to operate in the authority Jesus has given. So the next time you feel oppression, fear, torment, confusion, or heaviness trying to creep up on you, don’t just tolerate it. Speak. Take authority. Resist. Command. Tell it where to go.

Practical Application

Every morning when you wake up this week, say out loud, “In Jesus’ name, I have authority over all the power of the enemy.” Then, if symptoms, fear, or oppression appear, do not negotiate with them. Command them to flee.

Mark 16:17; Luke 9:1
