A Powerful Fountain

Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. (James 3:9-12)

James wrote to believers addressing a common issue among Christians: double-minded speech. You can't bless God and curse people out of the same mouth. Just as a fountain cannot produce both fresh and bitter water at the same time, something is wrong at the source if it does. Words always reveal what rules a person's heart. If bitterness easily flows from their mouth, it’s clear that bitterness is stored in their heart. Conversely, if faith flows effortlessly from their lips, then faith is being cultivated. This is not about perfection; it's about direction. Which way is your mouth leaning?

James wasn't saying that believers never make mistakes. He was emphasizing that believers shouldn't accept inconsistency in their speech as normal. Agreement with God should be reflected in how our words usually align. Your words will come back to you; you reap what you sow. Sowing blessings results in blessings in return. Sowing curses doesn't just affect others; it circles back to you. That's why guarding your mouth isn’t about politeness; it's about maintaining your power! Remember, Jesus said you will be judged by the same standard you use to judge others.

Practical Application

Have you spoken harshly or carelessly to someone or about someone? If so, recognize it and repent quickly. Then, deliberately speak a blessing over that person. Your words have power; don’t use them for the enemy.

Jeremiah 7:4; 1 Peter 3:9
