A Lamp That Doesn't Flicker

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)

There is a reason the psalmist compares God's Word to a lamp rather than a floodlight. A lamp for your feet illuminates the next step in front of you, not the entire road at once. That is often how the Word functions in daily life. It does not always reveal the whole plan, but it reliably shows you what to do right now, which is usually enough to keep you moving in the right direction.

This picture matters because of the pressure today to treat the Bible as negotiable, outdated, or simply one opinion among many. The world’s culture frequently pushes back against the idea that Scripture carries binding authority. But if the Word is genuinely a lamp for your feet, dimming it or setting it aside does not remove the darkness. It only leaves you walking blind.

The integrity of the Word is not up for renegotiation based on how comfortable its instructions feel in any given season or on any person’s decisions. The Word is a lamp that doesn’t flicker; it doesn't change just because the world doesn’t agree with it or because popular culture tries to rewrite it. It remains powerful and important exactly as it is. So when you choose to live by faith, you're choosing to be in the light instead of guessing in the dark.
