Your Reward with God is Better
Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection. (Hebrews 11:35)
We call the eleventh chapter of Hebrews the Faith Hall of Fame. It is such an important chapter because it gives us a glimpse into the tremendous things that the fathers and mothers of faith accomplished by believing God.
For example, Abel offered his sacrifice by faith. Enoch was translated from the earth to heaven by faith. Noah built an ark by faith, although he had never experienced rain, let alone a flood. Abraham followed God by faith, leaving his home and family, to go to a land he didn’t know. Sarah conceived a child by faith, although she was beyond child-bearing years. Then we read about the women who received their dead raised to life and others who were tortured for serving God.
Hebrews 11:35 expresses what these people believed. They believed that it was better if they were tortured and killed than if they remained alive because they knew their reward with God would be better than anything this world could offer them. That’s not to say that martyrs get a better resurrection than other believers. It’s a positive thought, but it doesn’t have any biblical foundation.
God is not the source of persecution. Satan is the one who comes with affliction and persecution to steal the Word of God. Mark 4:16-17 says, “And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness; And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word's sake, immediately they are offended.”
When you trust God wholly, you won't be moved even by the worst kind of persecution – the threat of death. You know that God will raise you – either now or later. And your eternal future is more glorious than anything this world could offer!
Practical Application – Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” God will get His work done. The gifts and callings of God are without repentance, and if you are faithful, His eternal rewards are better than anything in this world.
