But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. (Matthew 15:5-6)
The Jewish believers did not like any change when it came to how things had always been done. Honestly, a lot of people are the same way. Some people today worship tradition instead of worshipping God. They prefer strict adherence to a service outline rather than the direction of the Holy Ghost. They like church services to be predictable and familiar.
Back in Paul’s day, if you deviated from the way things had always been, you ran the risk of being killed - which is precisely what they tried to do to Paul. When Paul preached that righteousness was now through Jesus and not through following every law and commandment, it enraged the religious establishment.
Everything with God has a time and a season. God may have done something great 25 years ago, but He may have other methods He wants to utilize to bring about revival today. The content remains the same; The Gospel never changes, but methods may differ. If you have been on this earth for any significant amount of time, you probably have found out that life changes. Society has changed, laws have changed, my body has changed, and even the way we do church has evolved in the past few decades. Think about it! Thirty years ago, no one could foresee preaching the Gospel on social media.
If you don’t learn how to adapt to change, you will be left behind. Folks who get bent out of shape because they are so steeped in tradition have closed themselves off from hearing and following the Holy Ghost.
Practical Application – Ask God if you are stuck in some of man’s ways. Repent and ask God how you can adjust your life to follow the Holy Spirit and not the traditions of religion.
