Pride Leads to Destruction
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. (Proverbs 16:18-19)
An old proverb says, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” In the same way that fire produces smoke, pride yields destruction.
Destruction does not only mean death. Pride destroys marriages by refusing to put God first. Pride destroys families when parents decide to discipline their children the way that they feel like doing it, and not the way that God tells us to do it. Pride destroys workplaces and employment situations. Pride destroys futures when others refuse to follow God’s plan for their lives. Pride will destroy your health because you decide to eat whatever you want and don’t give ear to wise counsel or what the Bible has to say about stewarding the body God gave you.
Destruction is a path that you never want to take. God desires that you would be in health and prosper in every area as your soul prospers. Destruction was never meant for you.
The writer of Proverbs said in verse 19 that it is better to humbly be with those who don't have much than to have a lot of money and associate with the proud. Why? Because the wealth of the proud is linked to inevitable destruction. The life of the humble is connected to seed, time, and harvest. Those who are prideful and get rich quick are setting themselves up for a painful fall. Those who are humble and stay in faith are setting themselves up for the benefits and blessings that come from obeying God.
Practical Application – Take a moment to evaluate the people in your life. Have you ever desired to do business with prideful individuals who seem successful? Make it a point to surround yourself with humble people; there you will find lasting success.
