Not Your Problem is not a Person
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. (Acts 16:16-18)
Paul followed the direction of the Holy Spirit to go to Thyatira. Some believers think that would mean there would be no opposition to Paul’s ministry; however, that is not accurate or scriptural. Sometimes God leads us directly to opposition to confront the problems in that particular area.
When Paul was heading to prayer, the devil sent a young woman with an evil spirit to mock Paul and his followers. Prompted by the evil spirit, this woman followed them for several days making fun of them. Eventually, Paul had enough. He turned around and commanded the spirit to come out of her.
Notice, he didn't speak to the young woman; he didn't slap the young girl in the face; he wasn't annoyed at the young woman because Paul knew the real issue was the evil spirit - not the human that was being used as a puppet.
Your mother-in-law is not the problem; your boss is not the problem; people that seem to be against you are not the problem; the enemy is using them to oppose you; he is your real enemy.
Paul didn’t get holy oil and say a specific prayer. He didn’t ask the demon’s name to cast it out; he simply did what Jesus said every believer could do. He cast out the demon in the authority of Jesus.
Practical Application – Have you been having a problem with certain people? Ask God if there is an evil spirit behind their behavior. Pray that their eyes would be enlightened and command that spirit to leave them in the authority of Jesus.
