Humility brings Promotion
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)
When you think of those who receive a promotion, what traits usually come to your mind?
Maybe someone who did an exceptional job on a project? Perhaps someone who is the boss’s favorite? Perhaps someone who is already connected to someone else in the company? Or perhaps someone who claims others’ successes as their own. You may have seen characters like this get promoted in your work environment, but those are not the kind of people God promotes. Paul tells us in Philippians 2 that God promoted Jesus because of His humility. Let’s look at the ways God promoted Jesus for His humility.
Authority - Paul told us that God gave Jesus a name which is above every name. The word name in Greek is onoma and means authority. Jesus was given authority over every other authority that exists.
Honor - Paul also explained that every knee should bow to Jesus. In other words, everyone would demonstrate reverence and honor toward Him.
Position – Finally, Paul says that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. The word Lord in Greek is Kurios and means the Highest Authority.
Humility brings promotion. God wants you to have authority, honor, and position on earth, but you must be willing to humble yourself. Focus on God first and others second; then God will promote you.
Practical Application – Who can you honor today instead of focusing on yourself? Remember to speak highly of them to others and tell them that you honor them.
