How to Pray for Believers
That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth. (Philippians 2:10)
Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power. (Ephesians 1:16-19)
James wrote that the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5:16). So, first of all, if we want to pray effectively, we’ve got to be righteous. Praise God! Jesus has handled that problem for us! If you’re born again, 2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that you are righteous. “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Now that we know we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus; how can we pray effectual fervent prayers? We pray the Word of God, and some of the best prayers are those that Paul prayed for the church. Instead of praying general, “God bless sister and brother so-and-so,” let’s pray specific Bible prayers! Some of the best prayers are in the Pauline Epistles. My spiritual father, Reverend Kenneth E. Hagin, taught me to pray Paul’s prayers, and especially his prayers in the first and third chapters of Ephesians. You should pray these prayers for your church, your pastor, and for yourself. Change the pronouns and add specific names to make the prayers personal.
Practical Application – Pray Ephesians 1:16-19 for your pastor and other members the body of Christ - Father, I cease not to give thanks for my pastor, making mention of him in my prayers.
