O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. (Psalm 136:2-4)
Psalm 136:2-4 begins with a call to gratitude toward God. Have you noticed that our world has a severe lack of gratitude regarding what they have been given? Some people receive hand-outs with attitudes and blessings with disdain. The greatest gift you were given was God’s incredible mercy. You deserved punishment and death, and yet God, in His mercy, gave you life and abundance. His mercy was not just for what you had done in the past.
The psalmist depicted poetically that His mercy endureth for ever. The mercy of God has sustained us. The fact that we are here today is a testament to His mercy. None of us would be standing if God’s mercy was not enduring. But because of His great love, He continually extends mercy and forgiveness to us.
The psalmist also highlighted that it is God who does great wonders. Our lives are full of His miraculous power and love. Whether looking at His creation, His deliverance of our lives or others, or His daily provision and support, God’s wondrous deeds are all motivated by His mercy.
How often have we fallen, made mistakes, or found ourselves in a mess? And how many times has God, in His mercy, picked us up, dusted us off, and set us on the right path again? His mercy turns our mess into a message and our trials into triumphs.
Practical Application
Start each day by thanking God for His mercy. Let gratitude be the first thing you express to God when you wake up. When our hearts are full of gratitude, we can see how God is ministering to us throughout our day.
