God is a Giver

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. (John 3:16-17)

Some Christians mistakenly say that God gives, and God takes away. This is not a Biblical view of God and comes from one verse of scripture when Job was trying to figure out what he believed during a trial.

God is pleased when we receive what He desires to give. Luke 12:32 says that it is God’s good pleasure to give us the kingdom. John 10:10 says that Jesus came to provide us with a life of abundance. 1 Timothy 6:7 tells us that God gives us all things richly to enjoy. God always displays His love for us by giving. God gives sacrificially, voluntarily, and with joy.

Children naturally imitate what they see. When my children were younger, they would “play church” together. They did that because they saw their daddy do it. If we call ourselves children of God, then we should imitate our Father God. He is always a giver. When you give yourself entirely to God, you will act as He does.

One of the most significant ways that we can become more like God is to find opportunities to cultivate and grow our generosity for kingdom purposes.

Practical Application – What is your attitude about giving? If you find yourself worrying or giving out of compulsion, take time to think about how much God has given to you and how much God still desires to give. Let His generosity become your motivation.
