Before All Things
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (Colossians 1:17)
Have you ever heard the old idiom, “What came first the chicken or the egg?” In Paul’s time, there was heated debate on whether Jesus came before or after creation. Paul makes an emphatic statement in our verse today. He says that Jesus was before all things. That means before there were any things, there was Jesus. Jesus was not created, He is Creator.
And Jesus’ responsibility as Creator didn’t end when the heavens and the earth were created. Paul went on to explain that by Him, all things consist. All things in heaven and earth are held together by Jesus and His Word right now.
In Acts 17, Paul was preaching to non-believers on Mars Hill and explained through a poem that in Jesus, we live and move and have our being.
We live because of Jesus - He created us and planned on us existing on this earth. You are not a mistake. You have a divine purpose to fulfill.
We move because of Him - by Jesus, all things consist. He has given us the strength and authority to do all that God has called us to do.
We have our being because of Jesus - our identity is found in Him. If you have ever struggled wondering who you are, take some time to look at who Jesus is.
Jesus came before all things, and He holds all things together. We have a relationship with the most powerful being in all creation.
Practical Application – Remind yourself that you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.
