As You Heed, He Will Lead
Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. (Psalm 143:10)
Do you believe that God’s will automatically happens? Some teach that the doctrine of the Sovereignty of God means that nothing happens on the earth unless God directed it. If that were the case, then God would be responsible for every natural disaster, sickness, and crime against humanity.
When you understand the character of God, you will see that His sovereignty means that nothing happens that He does not permit. God is omniscient. You can't hide things from Him. He sees the past, present, and future. God knows the choices you will make; however, He does not force you to make them. He knew when you would accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, but He did not force you to be born-again. However, knowing and causing are very different things!
Have you ever wondered why God put a forbidden tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden? He wanted to give mankind a choice to obey and serve Him. God knew they would fall, but He didn't stop them. Instead, He sent a perfect sacrifice for our sins: A Lamb, slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).
God created man because He wanted a family. Still, He leaves the decision to join His family up to each individual.
The psalmist prayed, “Teach me to do thy will” because God’s will isn’t automatic. God has good plans for you, but you have a part to play. You can cooperate with Him and see His will come to pass, or you can hinder His will through disobedience or negligence.
Practical Application – Pray as the psalmist did: “Lord, teach me to do Your will.” Listen to His Word and heed His Holy Spirit. As you heed, He will lead!
