All Families of the Earth are Blessed
Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. (Genesis 12:1-3)
The blessing that began with the physical line of Abraham is intended for the entire world. God told Abraham that all families of the earth would be blessed through his seed, not merely those who could trace their bloodline back to Abraham.
The thought of the blessing extending beyond the Jews was a radical one, to be sure. The Jewish people thought they were the only ones who could have a relationship with God and the only ones who could be saved. They alone were set apart as His covenant people. Even Jesus said, “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 15:24).
However, when Jesus died on the cross, He didn’t die for only the Jews. Jesus said, “This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many” (Mark 14:24).
Jesus’ disciples didn’t understand what He meant. They still assumed Jesus’ sacrifice was solely for the Jews. Just before He ascended, they: “asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel” (Acts 1:6)? Jesus replied, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power” (Acts 1:7). They misunderstood God's kingdom.
They assumed it would be an earthly government established and benefitting only the Jewish people. But God's kingdom includes everyone who has accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. One day, an earthly government will be established, and Jerusalem will be the center of the world. God has allowed an over 2,000-year gap so the Gentiles could come into the kingdom – that was you and me.
Practical Application – Abraham's seed has blessed all of the families of the earth. His name is Jesus.
