A Better High Priest
And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. (Hebrews 7:23-27)
We needed a new covenant because the old one was insufficient. It could not accomplish what it needed to do. Paul explained that Jesus brought a much better way than the Old Testament.
Although the priests in the Old Testament did the best they could, they could never continue because eventually, every priest would die. Although the high priests were often good men with good hearts, none of them could be called sinless. Jesus, on the other hand, is a High Priest who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. In other words, Jesus is perfect.
Instead of the Old Testament requirement of animal sacrifice - Jesus gave the totality of Himself to us as a much better sacrifice. The Old Testament priests needed to make sacrifices first for their own sins and then for those they represented. This practice needed to be done repeatedly. Jesus gave His life for us on Calvary once and for all and fulfilled every sacrifice that would ever be needed for our sins - past, present, and future.
Why would anyone want to live in the old, imperfect covenant before Christ? His covenant is much better, perfect, and filled with joy. Thank you, Jesus, for your sacrifice.
Practical Application – Understanding that Jesus gave Himself for us, ask God what He would have you give this week for Him.
